Edit Equipment

This is one of the four ways to Manage Gear.

To add or remove equipment or spells, you select Edit Equipment & Spells from the Character menu or press ⌘-E. You then select the character on the left-hand side.

The Edit Equipment & Spells window with Hildegard having no equipement.

You select a category on the right-hand side and just drag and drop the equipment or spells onto the character on the left. The character sheet is updated instantly so you can have it open as you equip your character and see the encumbrance or the armour values update as you add items. There are a few details to consider while doing this, but first let's take a look at the categories.

The 'select a category' menu showing all the options.

When you select a category on the right, the character's equipment on the left will change to show the corresponding items currently on the character sheet. There are special considerations for some of these categories as explained below.

Containers

The category shown by default when you open this window is the Containers. This is because when you add miscellaneous items, like trekking supplies for example, you generally want to add them inside a specific container, so add containers before items. There is always the special "container" named 'On Person' for things that you strap to yourself or across a shoulder, like perhaps a rope or a Belt & Claw spanner.

When dragging an item onto a container, you have to be pretty precise with your pointer and drop when you see the + appear.

Armour suits

HMK Toolkit supports all the Armour Suits in the rulebook (and a few others), but these are simply a convenient way to add a number of armour articles at once. When you add a suit, it will actually add all the armour articles listed for that armour suit. Because of that, once you've added one suit or any armour article, you cannot add more suits.

So if you want to add a suit and some other article, add the armour suit first, and then add the additional articles. You can also add a suit, and then replace some of the articles for others. Just delete the unwanted articles, and add the new ones.

Armour/Clothing Articles

Armour articles are grouped by material. Click on the button on the left to disclose that sub-section.

Armour articles show their encumbrance (ENC), perception modifiers (PER), weight (W) and price on the first line. Below that are the body locations covered by that armour article. When an item covers only the front or the back, this is indicated by a /. If the location appears after the '/' then it only covers the back (like the padded cloak shown below), if it's before the '/' then it covers only the front (like a breastplate).

Missiles

Arrows and bolts need to be placed into quivers or arrow bags, so add one of those before trying to add those types of missiles. If this is an unwanted restriction, tell me and I will add a setting to turn this off. On the other hand, nothing else can be stored in quivers and arrow bags (so no bullets in quivers!).

Note: I did not implement these restriction in the Price Cyclopedia so if you want to put arrows in a backpack, use that tool instead.

Item Descriptions

Items show their weight (W) and the source where they can be purchased (S) as well as the price. Some items are sold in quantities instead of by single item, like arrows that come in quantity of 12. This is indicated in the description (QTY) and the price and weight given is for the lot.

You can click on the "Item Descriptions" button to show those if the items have them (not all do). Item descriptions also appear as tooltips on the character sheet. Hover the mouse pointer over an item and the tooltip should appear.

Spells

A portion of the spells category, sorted by convocation.

You can only add spells if the character has invested development points in the Pvarism skill, otherwise a note will be shown. By default spells are sorted by convocation and then by complexity. The order of the convocations is the same as the list on page 195, and it's the same order as the spells are listed in the book. You can also sort the list by name by clicking on the "Sort by name" button on the top of the list.

In addition to convocation and complexity, spells entries show the page number of the spell's description, as well as the Time, Range, and Duration. That information is also available as a tooltip on the character sheet.

Deleting equipment / spells from the character sheet

To delete an item or a spell from the character sheet, swipe left over the item and press the Delete button.

With a mouse you can right-click on an item in the list and select Delete.

Creating New Items

You can create new items to the following categories.

Categories of items that you can add.

You add items in the bottom section of the "Edit Equipment" window.

Enter a name and, optionally, a weight, a price and a description. You then select a source (where the item is generally purchased, use none if this isn't applicable) and a category. If you are unsure of the category, use Accessories. If the item is a container, enter the capacity (in lb) in the field. When you are satisfied just press Save Item and the item will appear in the list on the right-hand side (if the corresponding category is selected). You can then add the item to a character.

Some names cannot be used, a warning will be shown if this is the case. You also cannot add an item that has the same name as one currently in the list.

Deleting an item from the list

This refers to deleting items in the list on the right-hand side. If you want to delete items that are on a character (so on the left-hand side) see above.

You can only delete the same categories of items that you can add to (see the list above under Adding items to the list). To delete an item, select it in the list (on the right) and press Delete Item in the bottom section. A dialog will ask you if you are sure, press Delete in this dialog if you are. You cannot undo this.

Example of adding and deleting an item

For example Balthazar, a Fývrian Shèk-Pvâr, wants to add his elemental object, an Elderberry wand, to his character. He writes the name and a description, selects woodcrafter as the source, and esoterica as the category. He sets the weight at 1lb and leaves the cost at 0d, since this is given to him for free at character creation. He then presses the Save Item button and the item is added to the esoterica section (which he had previously selected). He then drags this item to his character sheet on the left. Since this is a unique item, he decides to delete it from the list of items. This doesn't affect the wand in his inventory. All of this is presented below.

Simple Trade Calculator

The trade calculator.

When you delete an item from a character's sheet, its value is added on the sold line and when you add an item its value is added to acquired line. This represents the character trading with someone, selling items (deleting) and buying them (adding).

You can enter a factor for the transactions, for example selling at 80% and buying at 120% (as shown in the example above). The cost/profit line will give the resulting trade, always from the point of view of the character, so in the example above, it costs 272d to the character.

The numbers next to sold and acquired are the unmodified values of the items sold/acquired, the factors are only used for the cost/profit line below.

You can reset the values by pressing this button.

Reset button.

Most of the time you will just want to know how many coins to remove from what the character had before the transaction, and this is listed next to acquired. Sometimes the prices will be higher than the standard costs, then you can enter the factor on the left (1.2 in the example above, so 20% markup) and if you didn't delete any items, or if you used the reset button after deleting items but before acquiring new items, the cost/profit line will show the cost with markup. Here is a quick example where you want to delete some items, but you're only interested in the cost of new items at a 20% markup. Let's say that Wilfred is upgrading to a plate breastplate, but he's not selling the kurbul breastplate he had before, he's just passing it to another member of his party. He first deletes the kurbul breastplate, then he resets the fields, enters the markup of 1.2 (20%) and then adds the plate breastplate and sees that he owes 288d to the merchant (and he needs to reduce his coins accordingly).
